I am an owl, not a lark....
I don't know about you other owls out there but I work best and feel at my most clear-headed and most creative in the dead of the night. On the other hand, mornings have always been a bit of a challenge and the motivation of an exciting day ahead has never been enough to prize me out of bed without a grumble.
Well, that was until about 5 years ago, when a biggish commute to work meant that I had to be up super early…. I remember driving along towards the motorway taking in the marvellous views: the colours, the rising fog in the autumn, the early sunrise in the summer. The landscape was at its most romantic in the early hours and I became so involved with its beauty that I’d often make a wish that my eyes were equipped with camera shutters so I could capture all those specks of beauty and keep them forever. That was how eventually I motivated myself out of bed with project sunrise: every morning I’d obey my alarm for the reward of a photograph of the early morning sky – that was the first thing I would do, before even brushing my teeth: pick up the camera, go to the window and snap (admittedly, I was lucky to have a lovely view too). I used to imagine that the early morning sky could predict the day ahead and buoyed by positive thoughts I did feel better about the otherwise stressful routine of the day.
Sadly, project sunrise died its death over the last 3-4 years. Our family moved around quite a bit, life became fairly unstable and the stress of not having a steady home for a good chunk of that period cast its long shadow over all the little things that had meant so much to me. I could still see the beauty around, I guess I just stopped feeling it and responding with wonder….. until yesterday, when I woke up and found myself by the window again, checking the sky. I don’t feel the same way I used to about it but I find myself curious again, wanting to chart its movement and share it with the world so I restarted project sunrise. If you want to follow its progress and offer your encouragement then please check by my Instagram live story every morning where I will share my morning sky until the end of this month.
